Tuberculosis in Nursing: Prevention, Treatment, and Infection Control

Credit: This training is approved for up to 11.5 continuing education hours (see below).

Target Audience: This training is intended for for public health, community or hospital-based nurses in Wyoming who provide care to persons at risk for tuberculosis infection or disease.

Topics covered include:

  • Epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB), global and local
  • TB transmission
  • Interpretation of tests for TB infection (IGRAs and tuberculin skin test) 
  • TB medications and  side effect monitoring
  • Zoom software training
  • Treating latent TB infection (LTBI)
  • Achieving completion of TB therapy
  • Conducting a TB contact investigation
  • Immigration screening for TB
  • Infection control for tuberculosis

Learning Objectives (partial list):
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics of persons at risk for infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Describe several strengths and limitations of diagnostic tests for TB infection and identify the recommended treatment options for those found to have TB infection.
  • Access resources for nursing care of persons on treatment for TB infection or disease
  • Name and apply the essential steps in TB contact investigation
  • Appropriately implement TB infection control practices in their setting

Training Format:
Includes lecture, discussion, and case presentations.

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California State Board of Registered Nurses, Provider Number CEP 12308. This training is approved for 11.5 continuing education hours. Board requirements prevent us from offering CE credit to people who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start of the training, or leave the training early. Therefore, partial credit will not be awarded.

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is designated as a Tuberculosis Center of Excellence for Training, Education, and Medical Consultation Center (TB COE) via a funded cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Curry International Tuberculosis Center prioritizes learners from the western region of the United States which consists of seventeen jurisdictions: Alaska, Arizona, California (including Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco), Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the U.S. Pacific Island Territories.
