Target/Intended Audience
The course is designed for nurses who are proficient in administering and reading the tuberculin skin test and are responsible for training others in tuberculin skin testing. This course is not intended for those learning how to perform TSTs.
Description
This one-day skill-building course provides the knowledge needed to plan, teach, and evaluate a Mantoux Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) course. The course content includes skills for planning and conducting a TST training including adult learning principles and teaching strategies. The curriculum is provided through lecture and participatory activities, including practicum in TST administration and reading and instructional skills demonstration. Each participant must demonstrate proficiency in delivering course content plus administering and reading the TST. Participants will receive feedback from experienced trainers as they practice their skills. Topics include:
– Adult learning principles for instructors
– Tips and tools to plan and conduct a successful tuberculin skin test training
– Tuberculin skin test course curriculum review and demonstration
Objectives
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate the principles of adult learning through teaching the skill of tuberculin skin
• Discuss the logistics of planning and conducting a TST training
• Select and utilize appropriate training resources
• Demonstrate instructional skills during a trainer/learner simulation
testing.

Continuing Education
The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California State Board of Registered Nurses, Provider Number CEP 12308. This training is approved for up to 7 continuing education hours. Board requirements prevent us from offering CE credit to people who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start of the training, or leave the training early. Therefore, partial credit will not be awarded.
The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is designated as a Regional Tuberculosis Training and Medical Consultation Center (RTMCC) via a funded cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
