Tuberculosis Case Management and Contact Investigation Intensive (Now a Hybrid Format)
Background: The TB Case Management and Contact Investigating (CMCI) Intensive (originally a four-day in-person training and more recently a series of live, virtual trainings) has been redesigned to address the need for just-in-time training of newly hired nurses and disease investigators working in tuberculosis (TB) care and prevention. The updated training is now a hybrid course that includes self-paced online modules and an interactive live, virtual session. The modules can be accessed, started, and revisited at any time during the course term offering flexibility for nurses and disease investigators. Nursing CEUs are provided.
The course content is divided into two levels to address different training needs. Level 1 is designed for learners focused on contact investigation and latent TB infection (LTBI) case management. Level 2 is intended for those providing nurse case management to patients with active TB disease.
Level 1: TB Basics, Contact Investigation, and Latent TB Infection (launched 2025)
- Target Audience: New TB nurses and public health professionals assigned to perform contact investigations or LTBI case management
- Content: TB basics, performing a contact investigation and patient interview, diagnosing LTBI and providing LTBI case management
Level 2: TB Clinical and Case Management (expected in 2026)
- Target Audience: New TB nurse case managers
- Content: Lab diagnostics for TB, treating drug-susceptible TB disease, treatment regimens, special conditions, adverse reactions, baseline assessments/evaluations, role of the case manager in supporting patients and determining treatment completion
To apply, submit an application through CITC’s training website. If you are accepted, you will receive an invitation to CITC’s learning management system, called Canvas.
Focus on LTBI
This one-day training is intended as an introductory training covering the basics of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) diagnosis and treatment for physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical care providers who manage patients at risk for tuberculosis. Interpretation of IGRAs (vs. tuberculosis skin test) and treatment regimen choices are discussed and there is an opportunity to apply this information in case discussions. CMEs and nursing CEUs are provided. This training is held twice per year.
This training precedes the tuberculosis clinical intensive.
Tuberculosis Clinical Intensive
This two to three-day advanced training is intended for physicians and clinical care providers who diagnose and/or treat patients with active tuberculosis. Training methods include didactic lectures and case-based teaching. The training provides an overview of laboratory diagnostics, medical management, care of the pediatric patients, radiology, and management of drug-resistance and other advanced topics for the care of patients with tuberculosis. CMEs and nursing CEUs are provided. This training is held twice per year.
This training does not include LTBI and interpretation of IGRAs. We suggest taking the Focus on LTBI with this training.
Tuberculosis Contact Investigation and Interviewing Skills Intensive
This one to three-day training is intended for communicable disease investigators and other public health professionals whose responsibilities include tuberculosis contact investigation (CI). Training methods include interactive lecture, role-play, and practice conducting case and contact interviews. The training provides an overview of the CI process, basic communication and interviewing skills, and opportunities to apply those skills in role-play activities. CEUs are provided. This training is held every other year.
Tuberculosis Program Manager's Intensive
This four-day training is intended for managers who have responsibility for TB program services in their health departments. The training is based on the Essential Components of a TB Program document. CMEs and nursing CEUs are provided. This training is held every other year.
