Cost: There is no fee for this training.

Credit: This training is approved for up to 5.00 nursing continuing education hours (see below). Certificates will be available approximately 12 weeks after the training to participants who complete the entire training and evaluation.

Target Audience: This training is intended for public health investigators, public health nurses, and other public health staff who conduct and/or oversee/manage TB contact investigations in California.

Description: This training will cover the basics of TB contact investigations (collecting patient information, determining an infectious period, prioritizing contacts, etc.) and interviewing (communication, preparation, re-interviews, etc.). Participants will apply what they learn in small group discussions to reinforce contact investigation and interviewing skills.

 

Training Objectives:

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

Day 1

  • Describe how the infectious period for TB is determined and its relevance to the investigation
  • Describe the characteristics of the TB patient, contacts, and exposure sites that should be considered when prioritizing a TB contact investigation
  • List two reasons why the investigator would recommend to expand the contact investigation

Day 2

  • Describe the three objectives of a TB interview
  • Describe how to prepare for a TB patient interview
  • Develop three specific questions an interviewer might ask to elicit the identification of contacts and/or potential sites of transmission
  • List three ways to effectively communicate during a TB interview
