Cost: There is no fee for this training.

Credit: This training is approved for up to 14.50 continuing education hours (see below). Certificates will be available approximately 12 weeks after the training.

Target Audience: This training is intended as an intensive clinical course for experienced medical providers (physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical care providers) who diagnose and treat active TB disease.

Topics covered include:

  • epidemiology of TB
  • diagnosis, management, and treatment of TB
  • transmission and pathogenesis
  • TB and HIV coinfection
  • laboratory diagnostics
  • pediatric TB
  • drug-resistant TB
  • legal and ethical issues in TB control
  • radiology
  • infection control
  • special situations

Information on LTBI and use of IGRAs will not be addressed in this training and participants who are interested in these topics are strongly encouraged to also participate in the Focus on LTBI training on October 29.

Training Objectives (partial list):
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • summarize new concepts of TB infection pathophysiology that considers “latency” to more likely represent a spectrum of bacterial activity levels rather than a clear-cut dormant versus active state 
  • identify key populations at risk for TB infection and TB disease based on current epidemiology data to inform and prioritize those populations for testing and treatment 
  • recognize the most common pulmonary and systemic signs and symptoms of TB to more effectively diagnose TB disease
  • initiate a comprehensive medical evaluation of a case presenting as potential TB to assess for disease
  • utilize interventions to prevent transmission of TB in health care facilities to protect healthcare workers who work with TB patients
  • recognize abnormal versus normal findings on chest radiographs to improve accuracy when reviewing radiographs for purposes of TB diagnosis and management
  • explain factors which could lead to increased multidrug-resistant TB and how best to prevent and decrease the possibilities

Virtual Training Format:
Includes lecture, discussion and case presentations. A lunch period and short breaks are included in the schedule.

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. This training is approved for up to 14.50 continuing education hours.

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.50 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California State Board of Registered Nurses, Provider Number CEP 12308. This training is approved for up to 14.50 continuing education hours. Board requirements prevent us from offering CE credit to people who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start of the training, or leave the training early. Therefore, partial credit will not be awarded.

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is designated as a Tuberculosis Center of Excellence for Training, Education, and Medical Consultation (TB COE) via a funded cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Curry International Tuberculosis Center prioritizes learners from the western region of the United States which consists of seventeen jurisdictions: Alaska, Arizona, California (including Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco), Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the U.S. Pacific Island Territories.
