Credit: This training is approved for up to 5.0 continuing education hours (see below). Certificates will be available approximately 12 weeks after the training.

Target audience: This training is for nurses, communicable disease investigators, and other licensed medical care providers who work with TB patients.

Topics covered include (partial list):

  • diagnosing TB disease
  • sputum collection
  • TB case management
  • TB medical management
  • TB disease treatment regimens and medications
  • managing side effects

Training objectives (partial list):
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. identify key populations at risk for tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis disease based on current epidemiological data
  2. identify at least 3 tuberculosis risk criteria that should be assessed for and when present, should lead to screening to prevent tuberculosis disease and transmission
  3. identify several characteristics that distinguish active TB disease from latent TB infection (LTBI)
  4. appropriately apply the American Thoracic Society (ATS) TB classifications 
  5. describe 4 diagnostic laboratory tests for active TB and list several features unique to each one
  6. state several chest X-ray findings that may be suggestive of active TB
  7. identify key steps involved in obtaining a quality sputum sample for TB laboratory testing
  8. identify the recommended regimens and medications for treating drug-susceptible TB disease
  9. identify the baseline evaluations that should be obtained prior to starting treatment for DS-TB
  10. describe common side effects and the associated monitoring required for individual first-line anti-TB drugs
  11. describe several important considerations for provision of video/virtual DOT

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California State Board of Registered Nurses, Provider Number CEP 12308. This training is approved for up to 5.0 continuing education hours. Board requirements prevent us from offering CE credit to people who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start of the training, or leave the training early. Therefore, partial credit will not be awarded.
